Ya-Sin
Who Will Give Life to the Bones?
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Ya. Sin.
By the Recitation full of wisdom, you are surely among the envoys, upon a straight path,
a descent from the All-Powerful, the Benevolent, so that you may warn a people whose ancestors were not warned, and who are therefore heedless.
The saying has proven true against most of them: they do not believe.
We have indeed placed shackles on their necks, reaching up to their chins, so that their heads are held back.
And We have placed a barrier before them and a barrier behind them, and We have covered them over, so they do not see clearly.
And it is the same to them whether you warn them or do not warn them: they do not believe.
You only warn one who follows the Reminder and dreads the All-Benevolent even though He escapes his senses: give him good news of forgiveness and a generous reward.
It is We, We alone, who bring the dead back to life, and We record what they advanced and the traces they leave behind.
And everything, We have enumerated it in a clear reference.
And multiply for them, as an example, the companions of the city: when the envoys came to it, when We sent two to them, and they denied them; so We made them mighty with a third, and they said: "We are indeed sent to you."
They said: "You are nothing but humans like us; the All-Benevolent has sent nothing down; you are only lying."
They said: "Our Guardian knows that we are surely sent to you; and only the clear transmission is incumbent upon us."
They said: "We see in you an ill omen. If you do not stop, we will surely banish you, and a painful punishment from us will touch you."
They said: "Your omen lies with yourselves. Is it because you are reminded?
Rather, you are a people of the excessive."
And a man came hurrying from the far end of the Capital.
He said: "O my people, follow the envoys; follow those who ask no reward of you, and who let themselves be guided.
And why should I not obey the One who originated me, and to whom you will be returned?
Should I take, besides Him, deities? If the All-Benevolent intends harm for me, their intercession will not avail me at all, nor will they save me.
I would then surely be in manifest error.
I have believed in your Guardian: so listen to me."
It was said: "Enter the Garden."
He said: "If only my people knew for what my Guardian has forgiven me, and made me one of the honored ones!"
And We did not send down upon his people, after him, any army from the sky, nor did We need to send one down.
It was but a single cry, and there they were, extinguished.
What desolation for the obedient ones!
No messenger ever came to them but they mocked him.
Do they not see how many generations We annihilated before them, and that they will not return to them?
And all of them, every single one, will be brought together before Us.
And a sign for them: the dead earth, which We have brought back to life, and from which We have brought forth grain, and it is from it that they eat.
And We placed therein gardens of palm trees and vines, and We caused springs to gush forth in it, so that they may eat from its fruit — and it was not their hands that produced it.
Will they not then be grateful?
Glory be to the One who created all the pairs, from what the earth grows, from themselves, and from what they do not know.
And a sign for them: the night, from which We strip away the day, and there they are, plunged into darkness.
And the sun runs toward a stable place that is its own.
That is the measure set by the All-Powerful, the All-Knowing.
And the moon, We have set for it stations, until it returns like an old curved palm-stalk.
It does not befit the sun to overtake the moon, nor the night to outrun the day.
And each swims in an orbit.
And a sign for them: We carried their descendants in the laden vessel, and We created for them, similar to it, what they ride.
And if We willed, We would drown them; then there would be none to answer their cry, nor would they be saved, except by a benevolence from Us, and enjoyment for a time.
And when it is said to them: "Guard yourselves against what is before you and what is behind you, perhaps benevolence will be shown to you,"
no sign, among the signs of their Guardian, comes to them without their turning away from it.
And when it is said to them: "Spend from what God has provided you," those who disown say to those who have believed: "Shall we feed one whom God, if He willed, would feed Himself? You are only in manifest error."
And they say: "When will this promise be, if you are veracious?"
They await nothing but a single cry that will seize them while they are quarreling with one another.
Then they will not be able to make any bequest, nor will they return to their people.
And the Horn will be blown, and there they are, swarming from their sepulchres to their Guardian.
They will say: "Woe to us! Who has raised us up from where we slept?
This is what the All-Benevolent promised, and the envoys were veracious."
It will be but a single cry, and there they are, all together, brought before Us.
This day, no Self will be wronged in the least, and you will be recompensed only for what you used to do.
The companions of the Garden will, this day, be occupied in delight, they and their spouses, in the shade, reclining upon adorned couches.
They will have savoury fruit therein.
And they will have whatever they call for. Peace!
A saying from a Benevolent Guardian.
"And stand apart today, O severed!
Did I not bind you by a pact, O sons of Adam, not to obey the Diverter — he is indeed for you a manifest enemy — and to obey Me?
This is a straight path.
Yet he did lead astray a numerous multitude among you.
Did you not then reason?
This is Jahannam, which you were promised. Burn in it today, for having disowned."
This day, We seal their mouths; their hands will speak to Us, and their feet will bear witness to what they used to earn.
And if We willed, We would obliterate their eyes; then they would race toward the path, but how would they see clearly?
And if We willed, We would freeze them in their places, and they would be able neither to go forward nor to return.
And whomever We grant long life, We reverse in creation.
Will they not then reason?
We did not teach him the art of seduction; it does not befit him.
It is nothing but a Reminder and a clear Recitation, so that you may warn whoever is alive, and so that the saying may prove true against those who disown.
Do they not see that We have created for them, from what Our hands have made, cattle which they own?
And We have made them docile for them: some serve as their mounts, and some they eat.
And they have in them benefits and drinks.
Will they not then be grateful?
And they have taken, besides God, deities, hoping to be helped. They cannot help them, though they will be, for them, an army brought forth.
So let their saying not grieve you.
We indeed know what they keep secret and what they disclose.
Does the human being not see that We created him from a drop, and behold, he is a declared quarreler?
And he multiplies for Us an example, forgetting his own creation.
He says: "Who will bring the bones back to life once they are dust?"
Say: "He who brought them into being the first time will bring them back to life; and He is All-Knowing of all creation."
He who made for you fire out of the green tree, and see, you kindle from it.
Is not the One who created the heavens and the earth able to create the like of them?
Yes! And He is the Creator, the All-Knowing.
His command, when He wants a thing, is only to say to it: "Be",
and it is.
So glory be to the One in whose hand is the sovereign dominion of all things, and to whom you will be returned.
