Al-Ma'ida

Faithful to Contracts

5:1

In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. O you who have believed! Be faithful to your contracts.

5:1

Permitted to you are the livestock beasts, except what is recited to you — without permitting yourselves the hunt, during the inviolable months.

God decides what He wants.

5:2

O you who have believed! Do not hold as permitted the perceptible markers of God, nor the inviolable month, nor the voluntary offerings, nor the vow-bound offerings, nor those heading toward the Inviolable House, seeking a favor from their Guardian and a good pleasure.

And once these months have passed, hunt.

And let not the hatred of a people, for having barred you from the inviolable place of prostration, drive you to aggression.

Help one another in virtue and guardedness,

and do not help one another in transgression and hostility.

And guard yourselves toward God:

God is indeed severe in sanction.

5:3

Prohibited to you are: the dead animal, blood, the flesh of swine, that which has been consecrated to other than God, the strangled animal, the animal on the brink of death, the animal in a declining state from illness, the animal dead from a blow of the horn, and what a wild beast has devoured — except what you have purified by fire — as well as the animal slaughtered in common whose shares are then drawn by lot with arrows.

5:3

That is an overstepping.

5:3

Today, those who disown have lost hope of your Law;

5:3

so do not dread them, but dread Me.

5:3

Today, I have perfected for you your Law, I have completed My blessing upon you, and I have approved for you being true to God alone as your Law.

But whoever is compelled by dearth, without inclination to transgression — God is indeed Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.

They ask you: what is permitted to them?

Say: "Permitted to you are the wholesome things, as well as the hunting animals you have instructed as trainers, teaching them from what God has taught you.

So eat of what they catch for you, and mention the name of God over it.

And guard yourselves toward God:

God is indeed swift in reckoning."

5:5

Today, the wholesome things are permitted to you. The food of those to whom the Scripture was given is permitted to you, and your food is permitted to them. And the women protected by the marital bond among the believers, and the women protected by the marital bond among those to whom the Scripture was given before you, when you give them their rewards, as men who commit to the marital bond, not in debauchery nor as takers of secret lovers.

And whoever disowns the faith, his deed collapses, and he will be, in the last life, among the losers.

O you who have believed! When you rise for the Contact, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, and wipe your heads,

5:6

and wash your feet up to the knees.

5:6

And if you have soiled yourselves, wash yourselves.

5:6

And if you are sick, or on a journey, or one of you has come from relieving himself, or you have known a woman in intimacy, and you find no water, then aim at a wholesome outcrop, and wipe your faces and your hands with it.

God does not want to impose any discomfort on you,

but He wants to purify you, and to complete His blessing upon you, perhaps you will be grateful.

And remember God's blessing upon you, and His solemn engagement, by which He bound you, when you said: "We have heard and we have deferred."

And guard yourselves toward God:

God is indeed All-Knowing of what the chests contain.

5:8

O you who have believed! Be firm supporters for God, bearing witness with equity,

5:8

and let not the hatred of a people drive you to not be just.

5:8

Be just: it is closer to guardedness.

And guard yourselves toward God:

God is indeed Intimately Acquainted with what you do.

God has promised those who have believed and done sound deeds: they will have a forgiveness and an immense reward.

And those who have disowned and denied Our signs — those are the companions of the Blaze.

O you who have believed! Remember God's blessing upon you, when a people was minded to stretch out their hands toward you, and He held their hands back from you.

And guard yourselves toward God:

and it is to God that the believers should entrust themselves.

God has indeed taken the solemn engagement of the Sons of Israel, and We raised up, among them, twelve leaders.

And God said: "I am indeed with you.

If you maintain the Contact, give pure liberality, believe in My messengers, champion them, and make God a beautiful loan, I will certainly cover your evil deeds, and I will certainly admit you into gardens beneath which rivers flow.

But whoever among you disowns after that has strayed from the straight way."

5:13

For having broken their solemn engagement, We cursed them and made their cores hard: they displace words from their context, and have forgotten a share of what they had been reminded of.

And you will not cease to discover among them a betrayal, except a small number of them.

So overlook it for them and turn the page:

God loves those who do good.

5:14

And among those who said: "We are indeed the Helpers", We took their solemn engagement, but they forgot a share of what they had been reminded of; We then unleashed among them enmity and hatred, until the Day of Appearance;

and God will soon inform them of what they used to do.

5:15

O people of the Scripture! Our messenger has indeed come to you, making clear to you much of what you were hiding of the Scripture, and overlooking much.

5:16

A light has indeed come to you from God, as well as a clear Scripture, by which God guides whoever follows His good pleasure toward the ways of peace,

and brings them out of the darknesses toward the light, with His permission,

and guides them to a straight path.

5:17

They have indeed disowned, those who said: "God, that is Al-Massih, son of Maryam."

5:17

Say: "Who then would hold any power against God, if He wanted to annihilate Al-Massih, son of Maryam, and his mother, and all those on the earth?"

5:18

And the Reoriented and the Helpers said: "We are the sons of God and His beloved."

5:18

Say: "Why then does He punish you for your offenses?

And to God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and of what is between them,

and to Him is the destination.

5:19

O people of the Scripture! Our messenger has indeed come to you, making clear to you after a break in messengers, lest you say: "No bearer of good tidings nor warner has come to us" — a bearer of good tidings and a warner has thus indeed come to you.

5:20

And when Moussa said to his people: "O my people! Remember God's blessing upon you, when He placed among you informants, and made you kings,

and gave you what He gave to none other among all beings.

O my people! Enter the sanctified land that God has prescribed for you,

and do not turn back, lest you go back as losers."

5:22

They said: "O Moussa! There is indeed there a people of tyrants,

and we will indeed not enter it until they have left it;

if they leave it, then we will enter it."

Two men, among those who feared, to whom God had granted His blessing, said: "Enter upon them by the gate;

once you have entered it, you will indeed be the victors.

And it is to God that you should entrust yourselves, if you are believers."

5:24

They said: "O Moussa! We will indeed never enter it, as long as they are there; go, then, you and your Guardian, and fight, both of you; we, we will stay here, sitting."

5:25

He said: "My Guardian, I indeed possess power only over my own Self

so separate us from the people of the oversteppers."

5:26

He said: "It is, then, prohibited to them, forever,

So do not lament for the people of the oversteppers."

5:27

And recite to them, in truth, the information of the two sons of Adam, when each offered an offering: it was accepted from one, and was not accepted from the other.

The latter said: "I will certainly kill you."

5:27

The former said: "God accepts only from those who guard themselves.

5:28

If you stretch out your hand toward me to kill me, I will not stretch out my hand toward you to kill you;

I indeed fear God, Guardian of all beings.

I want you to return burdened with my transgression and yours, and to be among the companions of the Fire:

But his own Self disposed him to the murder of his brother; he killed him, and thus found himself among the losers.

God then raised up a raven, which scratched the earth, to show him how to conceal his brother's nakedness.

5:32

He said: "Woe to me! Am I unable to be like this raven, and to conceal my brother's nakedness?" And he then found himself among those who regret.

5:32

That is why We prescribed for the Sons of Israel that whoever kills a Self, without it being for another Self, or for corruption on the earth, it is as if he had killed all mankind together,

and whoever gives life to one, it is as if he had given life to all mankind together.

Our messengers indeed came to them with clear proofs; then many of them, after that, are surely excessive on the earth.

The only recompense of those who wage war against God and His messenger, and endeavour to sow corruption on the earth, is that they be massacred, or crucified, or have their hands and feet cut off on opposite sides, or be exiled from the earth.

And those who do not judge according to what God has sent down — those are the oversteppers.
